Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Develop an implementable service improvement proposal that seeks to address a clearly identified need in your field of practice
• Critically appraise relevant service improvement tools, frameworks and methodologies and justify the selection of the most appropriate framework in the context of the selected topic.
• Critically reflect on the leadership and teamworking skills that will be required to embed and sustain your service improvement in your chosen field of practice
• Critically analyse current nursing practice using relevant data and to identify areas where efficiency, quality and/or safety could be improved.

Service Improvement in Action: Students will have the opportunity to learn from real examples of service improvement in healthcare settings. Students will have the opportunity to engage with those who have completed service improvement projects and will gain valuable insights into these projects’ real-world impacts on healthcare delivery. Methodologies and frameworks: Students will have an opportunity to explore service improvement tools, through practical group work and discussions from healthcare contexts. Students will gain understanding in selecting the appropriate service improvement methodology and acquire insights into the impact such approaches can have on improving sustainability, efficiency, waste management, and patient safety. Identifying an area for improvement: Students will be introduced to the importance of collecting and using data, and insights from a range of sources related to a current aspect of their service to determine what improvement, if any, is needed. This will include an introduction to types of data and their application for gathering evidence to identify and support a case for change. This will include full consideration of the problem, current guidelines, and internal and external contextual influencing factors as well as consideration of appropriate stakeholder engagement. Planning for improvement: Students will have the opportunity to begin planning a service improvement project relating to an identified area for improvement in their field of practice. This will include considerations as to what specific improvements are needed, how these would be implemented, and what outcomes would be important and how these would be measured. It will also involve students articulating the use of various service improvements tools, methodologies, and approaches. Implementation service improvement projects: This will involve considerations for implementing a service improvement project within your field of practice including understanding of seeking permissions to conduct service improvement work and the approvals likely to be needed in different contexts. Students will be supported through group and individual supervision to develop their plan for a service improvement project. Bringing people with you and sustaining change: Students will have the opportunity to consider how leadership and teamworking skills can inspire others towards change to mobilise the workforce towards a shared purpose, embed, and sustain improvements. in healthcare settings.
