Module overview

The Group Design Project challenges you to tackle a substantial engineering problem in the same way that professional engineering teams deliver complex projects in industry. The ideas are developed through the output of individual Final Year Projects (FYPs) and include detailed design, experimentation, computer modelling and/or manufacture. Bringing together the knowledge and skills developed throughout your degree, you will work collaboratively to design, develop and evaluate an innovative engineering solution in response to a realistic design challenge. Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will apply engineering science, analysis, modelling, experimentation and design methods to transform concepts into practical solutions. As your project develops, you will consider the wider responsibilities of professional engineers, including sustainability, ethics, environmental impact, legislation, commercial viability and the social needs of the communities your design will serve. Regular engagement with academic supervisors and, where appropriate, industrial partners will help you refine your ideas while developing professional communication and stakeholder engagement skills. By the end of the module, you will have gained first-hand experience of delivering a major engineering project as part of a professional team, strengthening your leadership, project management and collaborative problem-solving abilities while demonstrating your readiness for graduate engineering practice.
