Biography
Thomas Jeram-West (they/them) is a queer, genderqueer and AuDHD academic and creative practitioner working across arts and humanities. Broadly, their academic interests bring together sex, gender and sexuality; and fashion, dress and adornment, through the qualitative lenses of autotheory, memory activism, oral history and phenomenology.
Thomas has an academic background in languages, linguistics and translation (University of Portsmouth), and fashion journalism (London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London); and a professional background in creative higher education, creative entrepreneurship and participatory arts. They maintain personal interests in fibre arts, illustration and writing.
Currently, Thomas is the Administrator for the Creativity, Community and Resilience research project (Create/Connect) based at Winchester School of Art, which explores resilience and wellbeing in communities of trans and gender-diverse youth. They are also a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Chichester, where they bring an art school sensibility to the social sciences and model a neuroqueered pedagogy, teaching on modules that explore sex and sexualities, and social issues.
Elsewhere, their research interrogates both the history and contemporaneity of self-styled aesthetic expression in non-binary, gender non-conforming and otherwise gender non-normative individuals.
Thomas is also the Director of Five to Nine Studio Limited, a generalist and peripatetic creative studio.
