Marine Robotic Swarm Operations

Project overview

This project investigated the use of autonomous marine robotic swarms for large-scale environmental monitoring, with a particular focus on wave-powered autonomous surface vehicles operating in dynamic ocean environments.

The research developed simulation and modelling tools for studying the behaviour and deployment of marine robotic systems at scales that are difficult and costly to investigate experimentally. It examined how environmental conditions influence vehicle motion and collective mission performance, and how groups of autonomous surface vehicles can be deployed effectively for environmental observation.

Applications considered included the use of wave-glider swarms for monitoring tropical cyclones. The work contributed methods for efficient simulation of autonomous surface vehicles, modelling and validation of wave-glider dynamics, and the study of environmentally informed deployment strategies for marine robotic collectives.
