Instrumental Characterisation Techniques
Chemistry is underpinned and supported by an ability to characterise materials and understand the progress and results from synthetic methodologies.
The most widely supported instrumental characterisation techniques are NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, x-ray diffraction. Each of these techniques is routinely supported by chromatographic separations.
1. NMR spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool: by combining a wide range of 1D and 2D NMR experiments, the assignment of functional groups, atom connectivity and 3D molecular structure can be undertaken.
2. Mass spectrometry is the key enabling technology for the 21st century. It delivers practical and sustainable innovations to enable significant advancements in areas such as healthcare delivery, life sciences, environmental management, energy, food safety, and water quality.
3. X-ray diffraction can provide fundamental information about the structure of a wide variety of samples.
4. Chromatography plays a key role in the modern world. It delivers practical and sustainable innovations to enable significant advancements in areas such as healthcare delivery, life sciences, environmental management, energy, food safety, and water quality.
This module will explore the tenets of modern instrumental characterisation with a clear focus on practical skills associated with acquiring and evaluating data and spectral interpretation. Theory will be used only where necessary and appropriate to illustrate a practical point.
