Olatundun Gafari is a Lecturer (B) in the school of primary care, population sciences and medical education, faculty of medicine. She also holds an appointment as Equity Lead for the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Southampton. Her work focuses on improving nutrition and reducing health inequalities through systems and community-based approaches, particularly among underserved communities.
She holds a BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and an MSc in Public Health Nutrition from the University of Southampton. In 2025, she was awarded her PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Southampton.
Olatundun’s research combines epidemiology, mixed-methods research and participatory approaches to understand how social, environmental and behavioural factors influence nutrition and health across the life course. She has particular interests in adolescent nutrition, food insecurity, climate change and micronutrient deficiencies. Her current programme of research is developing adolescent-centred approaches to preventing micronutrient deficiencies and exploring the impacts of climate change on nutrition and health in vulnerable populations.
She sits on the core leadership team of the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme and co-leads the Nutrition and Health, Epidemiology and Professional Development modules. She also has extensive experience working with national and international organisations to translate evidence into policy and practice, with consultancies held with organisations including UNICEF. Her current research interests include adolescent nutrition, maternal and child nutrition and climate change.
