I am a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellow (2020-2028) and Principal Research Fellow in the School of Ocean and Earth Science. I lead the Organic Geochemistry laboratory and - since 2026 - had served as Head of the Geochemistry Research Group.

Current research
Over the last 150 years, global temperatures have risen by ~1°C. The magnitude of future warming will depend upon: (i) how much carbon dioxide (CO2) we emit and (ii) the sensitivity of the climate system to these emissions. To better constrain future climate predictions, I examine intervals in the geological past (“palaeoclimates”) during which greenhouse gas levels were similar to those predicted under future scenarios. By developing and applying new techniques to reconstruct key features of Earth’s past climate, I provide unique insights into how the Earth system will respond in the future.
My current research largely focuses on rock organic carbon oxidation. This process may contribute additional CO2 to the atmosphere and prolong global warming. However, the lack of empirical data from past warm climates means that our knowledge of how this feedback operates during future warm climates a major gap in our understanding. I am currently leading multiple projects via NERC and the Royal Society to develop and apply new tools to quantify this process in the geological past.
