Dr Mazed Islam is a Senior Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Sustainable Fashion and Textiles, and Co-Founder of Sustainable Fashion and Digital Transformation research group, at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on sustainable fashion systems, circular economy, digital transformation, sustainable supply chains, manufacturing, and consumption, life cycle assessment with a particular emphasis on driving sustainability transitions across the global fashion and textiles industry. He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester, where his research focused on embedding sustainable practices and circularity in the fashion and textiles. He also earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Southampton, demonstrating his commitment to academic excellence in teaching and research.
Dr Mazed brings over 16 years of experience across academia and the global fashion and textiles industry, having worked with leading brands, retailers, and manufacturers across the UK, EU, USA, Asia, and China. He has led and contributed to funded research as Principal Investigator and Co‑Investigator and has published over 62 peer‑reviewed outputs in leading international journals and conferences across Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis, Emerald, Sage, and Wiley.
He is a Fellow of Advance HE (FHEA), the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), and the Textile Institute (CText FTI), a Commonwealth Scholar (UK), a member of the UKRI Peer Review College (EPSRC, ESRC and AHRC), and a panel reviewer for Advance HE professional accreditation.
Dr Islam contributes actively to the global research and innovation community. He is the Editorial Board Advisor of reputed Journals including, International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology (Emerald), Research Journal of Textiles and Apparel (Emerald). He is Lead Editor of the special issue “Sustainable Practice and Governance in the Fashion and Textile Industry” (Sustainability), and Guest Editor of the forthcoming book Advances in Circular Fashion Systems (Taylor & Francis, 2027). He is a member of the Sustainability Forum at University of southampton, and the Digital Fashion Network (DFN), UK, serves on the International Scientific Committee of numerious confrerene and organisation, regularly Chairs sessions at international conferences (including Fashion‑Textiles Wearables'2026), and leads the Research Webinar Series, Fashion and Textiles Department at the in the University of Southampton. He is a regular reviewer for leading peer‑reviewed journals and books, including Journal of Cleaner Production (Elsevier), Business Strategy and the Environment (Wiley), Clothing and Textile Research Journal (Sage), Textile Research Journal (Sage), Journal of Fashion Marketing and Management (Emerald), Supply Chain Management: An International Journal (Emerald), Sustainable Production & Consumption (Elsevier), International Journal of Fashion Design, Technology and Education (Taylor and Francis), Production Planning and Control (Taylor and Francis), reflecting his sustained contribution to the global research and education.
In addition, Dr Islam has extensive experience across Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Doctoral education, including MSc and PhD supervision and external/internal PhD examination, with a strong focus on developing the next generation of fashion professionals, researchers, managers, and technical specialists.
His research is driven by a commitment to sustainable and digital transformation in fashion and textiles, advancing environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and resilient systems through interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation, and systems-based thinking.
