Dr Huanhuan Li is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Maritime Engineering Group, School of Engineering at the University of Southampton, UK. She holds PhD degrees from Wuhan University of Technology (China) and Liverpool John Moores University (UK), and has an interdisciplinary background in applied mathematics, maritime engineering, and intelligent transport systems. Her research focuses on maritime safety and security, intelligent transportation systems, green and autonomous shipping, and clean energy integration in maritime environments.
Dr Li has published over 90 peer-reviewed journal papers, including seven ESI Highly Cited Papers, and has contributed to several major international and UK-funded research projects supported by organisations including the Royal Society, Horizon Europe, and Innovate UK. She has received the Vice-Chancellor’s Rising Star Award in Research at Liverpool John Moores University and the Dean's Award for Early Career Academics at the University of Southampton, and has been recognised among the Stanford–Elsevier World's Top 2% Scientists. She was featured in an LJMU News interview discussing the role of artificial intelligence in shaping the future of maritime transport.
She serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. She is Deputy Editor of Ocean Engineering and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics (IJSTL) and the International Journal of Transportation and Logistics Research (IJTLR). She also serves as a reviewer for more than 80 international journals in maritime engineering, transportation, artificial intelligence, safety, and reliability.
Prior to joining the University of Southampton in 2025, Dr Li held research positions at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and Liverpool John Moores University (UK).
She teaches modules in Ship Manoeuvring and Control, Basic Naval Architecture, Maritime Systems Engineering, Autonomous Systems, Transport Systems Modelling and Control, and Research Methods, and supervises undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral research projects.
