Cyrus Golding is a Senior Teaching Fellow and Co-Director of Online Programmes at the University of Southampton.
He leads the Geography PGCE course and the PGCert in Online Education.
He was previously a Tutor, Lecturer and Interim Course Director for the inaugural Geography PGCE course at King’s College London from 2020 – 2025.
His research is informed by post-humanist philosophies and science and technology studies.
AI in education
Cyrus is pioneering the field of AI in education by working with schools to bridge theory and practice. He is frequently commissioned by school groups to advise on AI curriculum and staff training in both the UK and internationally.
His interests are in developing the practical application of AI in schools as well as the development of critical scholarship on the environmental and social implications of AI in education.
Schools in the Anthropocene
Cyrus has written about the implications of climate change and biodiversity loss for school curricula and pedagogy. His work explores rethinking the school site as the locale for pro-environmental actions, including developing methodologies for schools to account for their carbon emissions.
His work has also explored what the Anthropocene means for rethinking school leadership in a world where environmental change is already affecting schools around the world (Golding, 2026 forthcoming).
Geography teacher education
Cyrus' research has explored innovations in geography teacher education. This has included innovative approaches to teaching about colonialism and environmental hazards.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), a lifetime member of Salzburg Global for Nature-based education and a Member of the Geography Education Research Collective (GEReCO).
He Co-founded the student journal Routes in 2020 with Professor Elizabeth Rushton (University of Stirling).
Dr Golding holds a BA (first class), MSc and DPhil from the University of Oxford, and a PGCE from the University of Cambridge. In recognition of his contribution to education, he was awarded the 2024 Ordnance Survey Award by the Royal Geographical Society.
