About

Our vision

Directed by Prof Jon Dawson, we translate pioneering developmental and stem cell science for patient benefit.

The Centre for Human Development, Stem Cells and Regeneration (CHDSCR) was founded in 2004 as a cross-disciplinary research and translational programme within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton.

We do fundamental research into early development and stem cells together with applied translational research targeting the NHS and patient benefit.

Our vibrant and thriving interdisciplinary research programmes harness the translational strength of the University together with an MRes program in Stem Cells, outstanding clinical infrastructure and enterprise to deliver on this vision.

The Centre comprises a grouping of scientists and clinician scientists with a shared interest in Stem Cells, Development and Regenerative Medicine within excellent core space in the Institute of Developmental Sciences and units across Southampton General Hospital and Institute for Life Sciences

Our mission

Our aim is to understand early human development and fundamental stem cell biology to inform and aid our translation and development of cell therapies for regenerative medicine.

Director, CHDSCR
The CHDSCR provides a hub for the University’s unique strengths in stem cell science and its translation drawing together researchers from Medicine, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering.

Co-director, CHDSCR
As my research group studies nervous system regeneration, being a part of the CHDSCR community provides an optimal platform for us to share ideas and collaborate with others interested in regenerative medicine.
Cutout head and shoulders of Dr Owen Rackham
Doctor Owen Rackham
Associate Professor (SBS, Systems Biology)
I develop computational and experimental technologies to understand cell fate decisions and their role in disease. Together with colleagues in the CHDSCR, we aim to use these technologies to find novel ways to intervene when faulty cell-fate decisions impact on our health.

Related research institutes, centres and groups

Institute for Life Sciences

We bring together interdisciplinary researchers with expertise across the themes of health and medicine, living systems, disruptive life technologies, and insights through data

Bioengineering Science Research Group

We apply engineering principles to the fields of biology and healthcare.

Cell and Developmental Biology

We explore how molecular interactions between proteins and small molecules, defined at atomic resolution, govern biochemical output and in turn control cell behaviour.

Mathematical Modelling

The modelling group focuses on mathematical modelling across science and engineering, including physics (from the physics of quanta and strings to that of liquid crystals), chemistry (modelling lithium-ion batteries and solar cells), engineering (controlling sound direction), biology, medicine and healthcare (from stem cell population dynamics to medical imaging and healthcare models).

Interdisciplinary Dementia and Ageing Centre

We are a network that brings together local expertise from across the research spectrum within the University and University Hospital Southampton. Our aim is to increase understanding of dementia and brain ageing and how to treat and care for people with these conditions.

Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI)

We use statistics and demography methodologies to improve the way data is used.

Microfluidics and Sensors

Microfluidics is the interdisciplinary study of the behaviour, manipulation and application of fluid at the microscale. It underpins the concept of the lab-on-a-chip, where multiple key components and operations are integrated onto one small platform.

Neuroscience

We work on national and global priorities of health and well-being, underpinning research in neuroscience, and age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s.

Clinical Neurosciences

Examining how clinical and environmental factors can affect brain development.

Centre for Cancer Immunology

The Centre for Cancer Immunology's interdisciplinary research helps scientists and medics to collaborate worldwide. By bringing people together and sharing our expertise, we're working faster than ever before towards a cure for cancer.

Bone and Joint Research Group

We explore new technologies and treatments to promote the repair and regeneration of bones and cartilage.
