About
Do you want to further your language studies after an A Level or learn a language from scratch? When studying a language with us, you’ll start at a level that matches your ability. We can help you to reach graduate level in your chosen language.
If your programme allows you to take credit-bearing language modules, you can join us to learn a language as part of your degree. Language modules can be 25% to 75% of your degree, depending on your programme.
If you're not able to do this as part of your degree, you can take advantage of our Southampton language opportunity scheme. This offers free (non-credit bearing) language courses to all University of Southampton students.
If you’re part of the local community or a member of staff, we can offer you the chance to learn a language through our Lifelong Learning programmes.
Resources
Learning takes place online, face-to-face, and through our virtual learning environment (VLE). Our teaching methods encourage independence and taking responsibility for your own learning. This includes group and pair work, student-led oral classes, and one-to-one consultations.
Your learning will include:
- focus on the four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
- grammar
- translation
- interpretation
We also offer language and academic advising sessions. These sessions explore ways you can learn foreign languages independently.
