These will cover a variety of topics and cross-cultural encounters, within the broad area of Francophone film and non-fiction writing. Critical frameworks from mobility studies, postcolonial studies, cultural semiotics, and film studies will be introduced. This will allow you to explore work which makes cultural crossings, and reflects upon them, in relation to travels in Japan, the Americas, the Middle East, and travelling 'at home' in multicultural European cityspaces such as Paris.

From electric vehicles and renewable energy systems to artificial joints and advanced manufacturing, tribology plays a vital role in solving many of today's engineering challenges. This module explores the science and engineering of interacting surfaces and their practical applications across a wide range of technologies.

You will investigate contact mechanics, friction, wear, lubrication and surface interactions across multiple length scales, developing an understanding of the physical mechanisms that govern tribological performance. Through engineering analysis and practical case studies, you will examine how advances in tribology contribute to energy-efficient machines, power transmission systems, renewable energy technologies and biomedical devices. Throughout the module, emphasis is placed on understanding how surface engineering and tribological design can improve durability, reduce energy losses and enhance system performance.

By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate and apply tribological principles to engineering design challenges, developing specialist knowledge that supports careers in mechanical design, manufacturing, transportation, renewable energy and biomedical engineering.
