Introduction to Aircraft Design
This is an aerospace design synthesis module. The aircraft operations, aerodynamics, mechanics of flight, mechanics of solids and propulsion modules of Part I and II having equipped the students with the building blocks of aerospace engineering science, this module places them into the context of aircraft design in the ‘real world’, as represented by regulatory, performance and cost constraints. The module takes an applied, computational approach, introducing the students to key concepts through hands-on examples. -

Introduction to Astronomy and Space Science
The module shows how simple physical principles can be used to learn about the Universe. The focus is upon how one can measure physical quantities such as size, distance, temperature, age and mass for the variety of objects in the Universe. By its end students should be able to appreciate topics of current interest in astronomy and cosmology.
Students should be aware that this module requires A-level physics (with a C grade or above) and A-level maths (grade C or above). -

Introduction to Biological Oceanography
Introduction to general aspects of biological oceanography from phytoplankton to fish. The module is designed for students with no previous experience of studying biological systems. The module follows the flow of energy from light, via primary producers and then through the food chain in a number of typical oceanic systems - from coastal to open-ocean. Students will learn the importance of microbial processes and their role in the cycling of carbon, energy and thus in the regulation on global climate. Students will also be introduced to the range of methods used to measure and interrogate the biological components of ocean systems. Students will learn via a series of lectures and guided background reading. Students will gain practical experience through the sampling and data analysis of components of estuarine marine systems; this data will be used as the basis of a short report describing biological processes. -

Introduction to Biomedical Engineering
This module will introduce students to the disciplines of biomedical engineering (BME). This module is organized into 4 blocks.
The first block provides an overview of the key challenges in health and wellness, discussing ethical and security considerations as part of an overall theme of Responsible Research and Innovation.
Students will also study 3 further blocks that will provide a foundation in the key disciplines of chemistry, physics and biology as required for biomedical engineering.
All blocks are compulsory. -

Introduction to Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical engineering brings engineering to the service of human health, and it draws on an unusually wide range of disciplines to do so. Designing a diagnostic device or a new therapy demands not only engineering skill but an understanding of anatomy and physiology, medicine and healthcare, and the personal and societal context in which patients live and health services operate. This module introduces that landscape, giving you an overview of healthcare technologies and the varied challenges that surround their research, development and use.
You will explore the breadth of technologies used in modern healthcare and the engineering principles behind them, while developing an awareness of the practical, clinical and societal factors that shape how they are created and adopted. Rather than treating engineering in isolation, you will learn to see it within the wider system of patients, carers, clinicians and the healthcare industry, and to appreciate the multidisciplinary collaboration that successful biomedical engineering requires.
By the end of the module, you will understand the scope of healthcare technologies and be able to reason about the diverse challenges involved in developing and deploying them. This awareness provides valuable context for more specialist study in biomedical engineering and prepares you to contribute to a field where engineering, medicine and human need meet.
