Marine Structures in Fluids
Ships and offshore structures operate in environments where fluid forces and structural response are closely interconnected. Understanding these fluid–structure interactions is essential for predicting performance, maintaining safety and extending the operational life of maritime assets.
In this module, you will explore how waves, fluid loading and vessel motion influence structural behaviour throughout a vessel’s lifetime. You will develop analytical, numerical and modelling skills to assess structural response in realistic operating conditions and evaluate the effects of cyclic loading and environmental forces. Through assignments based on real vessels, you will integrate structural and hydrodynamic analysis to investigate engineering performance and durability.
By the end of the module, you will be able to assess the impact of fluid–structure interactions on maritime systems and apply engineering methods to predict structural integrity. These capabilities are highly relevant to advanced ship design, offshore engineering and maritime consultancy. -

Marine Structures in Fluids
This module extends the fundamentals associated with the structural design of floating maritime vessels to account for the complexity of fluid-structure interactions on ship life and operation. Students will assess the impact of fluid-structure interactions by predicting the structural integrity through life of floating maritime vessels in a seaway.
There are two assignments which integrate the fluid loading and structural response through applications to real floating vessels. -
