I investigate the evolution and function of cellular and metabolic pathways in microbial eukaryotes, including marine phytoplankton, symbionts and parasites. My research combines computational and experimental approaches to uncover fundamental principles of eukaryotic biology. I hold a joint appointment at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

Current research
Current research combines comparative genomics, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry to uncover the origins and functions of poorly understood cellular and metabolic pathways in microbial eukaryotes. Ongoing projects investigate bioluminescence in marine dinoflagellates, phosphorus metabolism, photosynthetic pigments, harmful algal blooms, and parasite biology. Experimental work uses Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, and Tetrahymena thermophila as model systems.

Biography
Jan obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from the University of South Bohemia, where he contributed to the discovery of a novel alga closely related to apicomplexan parasites. He continued his work on the evolution of apicomplexan parasitism and plastid organelles during his PhD at the University of British Columbia, which he completed in 2013.
Jan subsequently held independent fellowships at San Diego State University (CIFAR Global Scholar, 2014-2015) and University College London (Excellence Research Fellow, 2016-2019), where he discovered new lineages of eukaryotes and investigated the evolution of phytoplankton. In 2021, he established a research group at the Institute of Microbiology in Třeboň, Czechia, and later joined the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton as a Lecturer. He currently leads a research programme spanning Southampton and the Czech Academy of Sciences.
