Contemporary Practice and Critical Issues (Illustration)
This module is designed to develop knowledge of the critical issues that surround contemporary illustration practice and the wider image cultures in which it operates. It introduces key ideas and concepts through a review of the social, political and cultural influences shaping the discipline.
Using a range of critical texts, case studies, projects and practitioners, you will be introduced to methods and approaches that support critical analysis of contemporary practice. You will examine how illustrators engage with current issues and consider the role of illustration in shaping narratives, publics and cultural discourse across different contexts and platforms.
You will identify relevant sustainable and ethical contexts and explore how these inform both written and visual responses. Through this, you will further develop your academic skills in research and writing, alongside your ability to communicate critical ideas using credible and substantiated sources to support your arguments and creative work. As part of the module, you will produce creative work that synthesises your understanding of current and emerging debates, issues and critical contexts. -

Contemporary Security Challenges
The module provides an overview of the main security challenges facing the world today. Drawing on classic and contemporary literature from International Relations and other academic disciplines, together with case studies, we consider such questions as: what are the main threats to security today and in the near future? What is the nature of these threats? From what and against whom? How might they be addressed? The module examines these questions in the context of the policy options that may be available. For students enrolled in the MSc International Security and Risk degree, the issue-based approach in Contemporary Security Challenges complements the theory- driven approach in the module Security Theory. -

Contemporary Theories of Justice
The aim of this module is to familiarise you with several important, but competing, theories of justice, which date from the 1970s onwards. Such theories give guidance on important questions of distributive justice (who ought to get what, when and why?), and provide, to varying degrees, grounds for the condemnation of real-world injustices. On completing the module, you will be expected to have a good understanding of the pros and cons of these theories. You will also be able to apply those theories to several important issues, such as racial or gender-based injustice, and the politics of multiculturalism. -

Such theories give guidance on important questions of distributive justice (who ought to get what, when and why?), and provide, to varying degrees, grounds for the condemnation of real-world injustices. It also engages with important methodological debates about how we should theorise about justice, and what status the results of our reflection should be seen as having. On completing the module, you will be expected to have a good understanding of some important recent theories of justice, the various difficulties they face, and the contested methodological territories on which they are staked out. -
