Humanities Study Abroad Preparation Module
This module will prepare you for study abroad and also take you through the application process for study abroad. Before you travel, you are required to take out appropriate insurance policies and engage in on-going monitoring of risk and this module will provide professional input as well as rigorous assessment of the document/s which you submit. Particular attention will be paid to the quality of your experience and the module will encourage you to formulate academic, intercultural, personal and professional objectives. Living abroad can be all the more enriching if you are able to reflect upon your experiences and this module will equip you for that by helping you to think critically about yourself, where you come from and how you observe and engage with new places and people. -

Hydraulics
This module continues to develop the fundamental themes on fluid mechanics introduced in the module FEEG1003 “Thermofluids” and applies them to the study of incompressible fluids in adiabatic conditions. It will focus on problems associated with water flowing in closed conduits (e.g. pipes) and open channels (e.g. rivers). The material that will be taught includes a good balance between theoretical principles (i.e. mass, momentum and energy conservation principles) and their application to real problems in hydraulic engineering. In dealing with closed conduit flows students will learn how to use these principles to find ways of delivering a required flow rate to some chosen locations under prescribed conditions. When studying open channel flows, students will learn how to predict water levels for a given channel geometry, bed condition (i.e. bed roughness and slope) and flow rate.
The module represents a pre-requisite to CENV3061, Engineering Hydrology and CENV6155 Hydraulic Engineering and Sediment Transport. -

Hydrodynamics
In this module the fundamental concepts of hydrodynamics are introduced. The main focus is on inviscid, incompressible flow, but viscous effects including boundary layers and separated flow are introduced as well. The lectures are complemented by laboratory sessions with relevance to the taught material. -

Hyperbolic Geometry
This is a structured self-study module designed for MMath students in their fourth year. In this module, we take a guided tour of the hyperbolic plane, H, exploring its geometry and the group preserving its geometric structure. The hyperbolic plane arises in several contexts, most publicly in the etchings of MC Escher. We begin with a brief review of topology on Rn, to set the stage, before embarking on the actual tour of the hyperbolic plane. We will examine several realizations of H and explore the connections between them. We will classify the isometries of H, which are the maps from H to H preserving both angle and length, and close by considering area and trigonometry in H -
